pre-employment medicals

At Workers Health Evaluation Network, we are asked by companies large and small, to conduct pre-employment medical examinations.

We understand that by law, an employer is not allowed to compel any potential employee to undergo an examination by any particular doctor.  We also clearly understand that it is “discrimination” not to employ any person on the basis of any handicaps that may become apparent at the interview or any subsequent examination.

However, it also seems logical that any potential employee will oblige a potential employer, by agreeing to undertake an examination that is offered to them.  Following the examination, the employer is then free to decide whether he believes that any applicant is more or less suitable for a position than any other applicant.

It is unfair to both parties if somebody takes a job to perform a duty that he is not suited in doing.
Examples include:

  • Mixing colours if the person is colourblind
  • Strong physical labour is the applicant has a musculoskeletal abnormality
  • A dangerous job which has warning bells, if the person cannot hear them
  • A proofreading job if the applicant cannot read

We are able to customise any pre-employment examination for the particular company.
We also perform standard “medicals” which examine a wide range of items, including:

  • Basic medical history
  • Medications
  • Allergies
  • Height and weight
  • Blood pressure
  • Testing of urine
  • Visual acuity
  • Colour vision
  • Hearing testing
  • Chest Xrays
  • Blood tests for cholesterol, thyroid, etc
  • Cardiogram
  • Stress testing
