health
assessments
Pre-employment Health
Assessments (see
also pre-employment
medicals)
- Performed on prospective employees.
- When assessing applicants for a particular
job, their capabilities and previous experience are essential. So to is their
current health, as employers must ensure that they are fit for the proposed job without
risk to themselves, their colleagues and the general public.
- Such assessments provide baseline data for
future comparisons
e.g. visual acuity, blood levels.
Routine Health Assessments
- Some jobs require routine assessments to
comply with statutory regulations
e.g. spray painters, driving licence examinations.
- Some workplaces need to monitor the health
of employees exposed to known hazards
e.g. chemicals, noise.
- Some occupations monitor their employees due
to the potential of affecting the general public
e.g. food handlers.
Periodic or Once-only Assessments
- Prior to obtaining life insurance or
superannuation.
- Assess employees taken ill at work.
- Assessing the need for precautionary
measures
e.g. hepatitis immunisation screening and subsequent immunisation.
